How it was made
Square developed and published the game as a collaboration between creators associated with Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Dragon Ball. Kazuhiko Aoki produced the project; Takashi Tokita, Yoshinori Kitase and Akihiko Matsui received director credits; Akira Toriyama designed the characters; and Yasunori Mitsuda led the score with contributions from Nobuo Uematsu and Noriko Matsueda.

Why it matters
Chrono Trigger is historically important for its visible enemies, multiple endings, New Game Plus mode, compact pacing and tightly integrated battle presentation. It demonstrated that a large-scale Japanese RPG could remain accessible and replayable without relying on constant random encounters.
