GOLD STANDARD EDITORIAL
The complete Almanac record
The workbook’s long-form editorial fields are presented here as a readable feature rather than a wall of database cells.01DEVELOPMENT
How it was made
Development lasted about five years and faced repeated technical difficulties. Shigesato Itoi directed and wrote the game; Satoru Iwata helped restructure its programming and co-produced with Tsunekazu Ishihara. Keiichi Suzuki and Hirokazu Tanaka led its eclectic music.
02HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE
Why it matters
It showed that a console RPG could reject medieval fantasy, use contemporary satire and still deliver an emotionally resonant adventure with distinctive mechanical ideas such as rolling health counters.
03RECEPTION
How it was received
Its North American release sold modestly and received mixed commercial treatment, but critical reassessment and an active fan community transformed it into a celebrated cult classic.
04LEGACY
What it left behind
EarthBound strongly influenced later independent RPGs, particularly games combining humour, unconventional settings, self-aware writing and emotional themes.
05SALES
Commercial record
Approximately 658,000 units worldwide based on reported Japanese and United States sales.
