How it was made
Sega developed and published Phantasy Star for the Master System. Kotaro Hayashida handled executive planning and scenario work, Tokuhiko Uwabo composed the music, Rieko Kodama led visual design and Yuji Naka served as lead programmer. The game used a large cartridge and battery-backed saving to support an unusually ambitious adventure for the hardware.
02HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE
Why it matters
Released in 1987, Phantasy Star was an early major console JRPG and one of the first to feature a prominent female lead. Its multi-planet setting, smooth first-person dungeons and technical presentation helped establish Sega as a serious competitor in console role-playing games.
03RECEPTION
How it was received
Contemporary and retrospective commentary has consistently highlighted its technical ambition, colourful presentation and distinctive science-fantasy setting, while noting the difficulty and mapping demands of its dungeon design.
04LEGACY
What it left behind
The game launched the Phantasy Star franchise and influenced Sega's later RPG output. Its heroine Alis, Algol setting and mix of fantasy with advanced technology remain central to the series' identity.
