DEVELOPMENT

How it was made

Sega developed and published Phantasy Star for the Master System. Kotaro Hayashida handled executive planning and scenario work, Tokuhiko Uwabo composed the music, Rieko Kodama led visual design and Yuji Naka served as lead programmer. The game used a large cartridge and battery-backed saving to support an unusually ambitious adventure for the hardware.

Why it matters

Released in 1987, Phantasy Star was an early major console JRPG and one of the first to feature a prominent female lead. Its multi-planet setting, smooth first-person dungeons and technical presentation helped establish Sega as a serious competitor in console role-playing games.
